STARTER MOTOR

LV 3

Ever wondered which motors rely only on a start capacitor to get going? The answer is **split-phase induction motors**—but more specifically, a type called **capacitor-start induction motors**.   Here’s the deal: These motors need a little extra push to start spinning. The start capacitor is like a "boost button" for them. When you turn the motor on, the capacitor sends a jolt of energy to a special part called the "start winding," which creates a magnetic field. This field works with the motor’s main winding to get the motor spinning quickly.   But here’s the key part: Once the motor gets up to speed (usually around 75-80% of its full speed), a little switch called a "centrifugal switch" kicks in. It disconnects the start capacitor, so the motor keeps running on its own without the capacitor. That’s why these motors only use the start capacitor—just for the starting kick, not for keeping going.   You’ll find these motors in things like small air compressors, some pumps, or even certain power tools. They’re great for machines that need a strong start but don’t need the capacitor to stick around once they’re moving. So next time you see a tool fire up with a quick burst, it might just be a capacitor-start motor doing its thing!
